Janes Has High Praise For Wombourne

Janes Has High Praise For Wombourne

Club Admin24 Mar 2023 - 17:29

The Plums limped through into the Semi Final of the Smedley Crooke Cup with a disappointing performance last night.

Danny Janes' side took the lead in the first half after Ben Johns' delivery was guided into the Wombourne net by their own central defender but despite the away keeper making a number of saves, the performance level was lacking.

Despite a disappointing performance, Pershore still looked in control of the game against a hard-working West Midland (Regional) League side.

Whilst not taking advantage whilst on top in the game, Wombourne punished late on in the game after being awarded a dubious penalty following Kirk Layton's tackle on the Allstars forward.

The initial penalty was saved by Cox but a retake was ordered with players inside the 18-yard box and that was tucked away.

With the game looking set for a shoot-out to decide who would progress into the Semi Final, Matt Nutt broke from a Wombourne corner before sending Hammond down the right side, he pulled the ball back to the edge of the box where Willis struck a left footed shot into the corner to give Pershore the lead once more.

A frustrating evening for 90% of people at the AIM Community Stadium last night but nevertheless, The Plums are the first team into the Semi Final of the Smedley Crooke Cup.

"Disappointing, frustrating and a lack of quality are the terms I would use to sum up the performance." said Janes.

"I have to praise Wombourne, they were excellent and pushed us all the way to the end. They deserved more than to concede a last minute winner, the levels they produced merited at least a penalty shoot-out.

"We were the better team overall, and that is expected because there are two divisions between the two sides. However, the majority of the Wombourne players stepped up and produced at least an 8 out of 10 performance, we had the majority of the team at 4 and 5 out of 10.

"Yes we rotated for the game, but the players on that pitch are good players, I expected a lot more in relation to quality and impact on the game.

"I asked two questions of the players before they went out, can you be the best player and have you contributed to the overall game? Not many of those players can answer those two questions with a positive answer.

"We are through to the Semi-Final and I am very happy about that, the performance was difficult to watch and I felt for those supporters who also had to endure the game.

"The players at the moment are making my job very easy, I have no headaches with regards to team selection. Levels need to be lifted immediately, if we carry on as we are at the moment then we could find ourselves in trouble."
