Janes Still Wanting More From Forwards

Janes Still Wanting More From Forwards

The Plums fell to defeat last night in the Wiseman Lighting Floodlit Cup Final, losing 2 - 0 to Mangotsfield United.

With the game finely poised at 0 - 0 following the first leg of the Wiseman Lighting Floodlit Cup at Mangotsfield United last Tuesday, there was real hope around Pershore Town that Danny Janes' side would secure another cup success for the club.

A break-away goal in each half for The Mangos' striker however would prove enough to return the Floodlit Cup Trophy to Bristol.

Whilst The Plums dominated much of the ball, they were unable to unlock a very rigid Mangos backline, whilst also missing some very good chances when they did arise.

Jadyn Crosbie proved the difference on the night between the two sides, working tirelessly for the away side up top on his own.

It's the first taste of defeat in the cup final for Danny Janes' side but they'll be no time to overthink as Pershore host Wombourne Allstars at the AIM Community Stadium on Thursday evening for a Smedley Crooke Memorial Cup Quarter Final tie.

"First of all, I would like to congratulate Mangotsfield on their victory and praise them for their ruthlessness on the night." said Janes.

"The result is disappointing and the game just didn't go our way. I felt between both boxes we were good, dominated the ball and controlled the game. Mangotsfield sat deep and look to play on the counter which we knew would be the case, we spoke about retaining the ball in key areas and transitioning well to slow them down when they did break.

"Both of their goals have come from players giving the ball away cheaply. We allow their forward to come inside for the first goal when we looked in control and he was travelling away from goal. Second goal we lose possession and their forward is put through on goal and he finished well.

"Despite the goals conceded being very avoidable, Mangotsfield had three chances the entire game and took two of them. We had five or six great opportunities and did not take them, I can recall their goalkeeper making one good save which sums up the attacking quality we had on the night.

"I have raised concerns over the last few weeks with the quality in the final third, it just hasn't been to the standard we expect. That was our downfall for this game and it cost the team. Goals change games and the pattern of the play, we never unsettled Mangotsfield and they contributed to grow in confidence.

"The players are hurting and they deserve a lot of praise for their desire to keep chasing the game. They did really well to reach the Final and to put us in a great position. We have the league in our hands and two further Quarter Finals, not many teams can say they are in that position so they deserve full credit.

"We take the defeat as a team and dust ourselves down ahead of the Smedley Crooke fixture.

"Thank you to our amazing volunteers who worked on the pitch tirelessly on Monday and thank you for the support on the night."
