Match Preview; Malmesbury Victoria

Match Preview; Malmesbury Victoria

Club Admin3 Jan - 20:29

The Plums are back on their travels tomorrow, this time it's a trip to Cirencester but to take on Malmesbury Victoria in the Hellenic League.

The two sides were meant to meet at The Flying Monk back in November, but due to concerns over Malmesbury's playing surface the fixture was reversed therefore leaving Janes' side to travel to Malmesbury in January.

Or so we thought. Credit to The Vics who have taken matters into their own hands, with the surface at The Flying Monk still being unplayable, tomorrow's fixture will now be played on the 4G surface at Cirencester Town.

Following promotion via the play-offs last season into the Hellenic League Premier, it's been a tough season so far for The Vics and their manager, Ant Brown. A number of departures was tough, an unplayable home surface just added to the struggles and Malmesbury Victoria find themselves at the bottom of the table but having played ten games fewer than some in the league.

The comparison is a large one for The Vics, just four players that won the Hellenic League Division One Play-Off Final featured in their last game, a 4 - 0 defeat away to Lydney Town. Two of those, Lewis Toop and Kyle Pitts, have also since left to join Brimscombe & Thrupp and Cirencester Town respectively.

The Vics are on a run of eight defeats in a row in all competitions but they'll be confidence that as we now step into 2025, they can turn around their fortunes as they fight to stay in the Hellenic League Premier Division.

Draws away to Tuffley Rovers and Worcester Raiders proves just how competitive Malmesbury are and Ant Brown will be looking for more of that competitiveness tomorrow at Cirencester.

Jack Smith leads the way for The Vics in the scoring charts, he has six goals to his name in seventeen appearances. The former Brimscombe & Thrupp man has notched ten times for Malmesbury in each of the last two previous seasons and he's well on his way to double figures once again.

Biagio Mazzotta will be one to watch in midfield for The Vics, he joined from Fairford Town during the 2022/23 season and has been a mainstay for Brown's side. Technically very gifted, Biagio will look to dictate the game from deep, playing forwards with quality that can unlock any defence in this league.

Without a win since August, Malmesbury Victoria will be looking to start 2025 with three points against The Plums.

For Danny Janes' side, it was a big win away to Royal Wootton Bassett Town a week ago, coming from behind to secure all three points with a 2 - 1 win. Luke Carsley and Nathan Benson on target in that one, with 'Bennos' second half penalty proving enough to win the game.

The Plums have been in good form of late, two wins from two takes them into tomorrow's game but a narrow defeat to Roman Glass previously and a draw at home under the lights to Highworth Town certainly weren't bad performances.

Janes will be looking for his side to assert themselves on a wounded Malmesbury Victoria tomorrow afternoon on a surface that will enable Pershore to get on the ball.

Aidan Clark still leads the way in the scoring charts, the frontman has twelve goals this season from fifth-teen starts, whilst James Baldwin is just shy of double figures from his fourteen starts after returning from Hereford Pegasus in the summer.

Bailey Fuller is expected to return to the squad after being unavailable for the trip to Royal Wootton Bassett, Sean Cooke could also return after an injury kept him out last weekend.

Harlie Price will be a doubt for the game, he also missed last week's trip to Wiltshire through illness.

It's a busy month for Pershore Town, Danny Janes' side have seven games in January and they'll be an eagerness to begin 2025 with three points at The Talent Hire Stadium.

"We are obviously delighted that the game has moved to Cirencester on their 4G, we are desperate to play, we need to play." said Janes.

"Malmesbury are fighting for their lives and they will be ready to go, our standards must be excellent, who are we to get complacent when we have underachieved this season?

"We have to win again, let's see who has the mind-set to deliver a performance that merits the result that we need."
