The Last Line Of Defence

The Last Line Of Defence

Club Admin28 Apr 2023 - 14:28

A clean sheet record to rival most across the country, The Plums have used four goalkeepers this season on the way to winning a league title.

Eddie Cox, Scott Loader, Luis Sone and Brendon Bunn have all pulled on the gloves for Danny Janes' Pershore Town side this season, all playing their part in keeping thirty clean sheets.

Whilst Eddie has remained a consistent throughout the season, following injury and availability Scott Loader and Luis Sone have both been called on in a season that has seen Pershore Town return to Step 5.

A tricky period for The Plums was helped with the addition of Brendon Bunn. With Eddie and Luis Sone injured, Scott Loader unavailable, Janes was able to dual-sign Bunn from Studley and due to his schedule he was able to feature in three back-to-back games in February.

Eddie Cox joined The Plums last season, following Janes from FC Stratford whilst Luis Sone linked up with Pershore ahead of the current season. Scott Loader remains a consistent at the club, whilst captaining Adam Parker's Development Team in Hellenic League Division Two West.

Since Janes took over at Pershore Town in November 2021, The Plums have kept forty clean sheets in eighty-two fixture, thirty of those coming during the current 2022/23 season.

With a Cup Final and a Smedley Crooke Cup Semi Final still to play, the importance of having a reliable keeper will be called into question once again and Janes will know he can rely on whoever is between the sticks for his side.

"As a goalkeeping coach I’m always telling my keepers that their position is the hardest position on the pitch." said James Rushton.

"One minute you can be a hero, the next minute you could be picking the ball out the back of your net and that’s the ups and the downs of being a keeper.

"All we expect is that they train in the training sessions as we would expect them to play in a match, in theory they should therefore then be prepared for anything.

"What a season it’s been this season for me working with four fantastic keepers.

"Eddie has been the number 1 all season working outstandingly hard during training sessions to improve himself and keep his standards high.

"Luis Sone has been spot on during training and whilst Eddie picked up an injury against Clanfield young Scott Loader jumped at the chance to help us out for a few games which was great experience for him.

"Bren Bunn then stepped in for two league games and a cup game and played very well for the club after playing against us last season for Studley.

"As for me, I am excited to season what pre-season will bring and the next step of the journey taking on some great teams at Step 5.
