The Wychavon derby at Kingy’s on Saturday proved a difficult afternoon for Pershore Town, as hosts Droitwich Spa ran out 4–1 winners in a game overshadowed by a serious injury to returning defender Nigel Hinkulow.
The afternoon began with a moving Remembrance ceremony and two minutes of silence observed by both teams and supporters. Once the action started, Pershore made a bright opening, controlling possession and creating early openings as they looked to capitalise on a positive start.
However, the home side took the lead on 17 minutes when Jack Davies was brought down in the box by Tyrese Griffin, and Ben Tilbury converted the resulting penalty from the spot.
Pershore responded well and almost levelled moments later when Cal Harper found himself through on goal, with only Dom Rogerson to beat Harper fired wide of the target. The miss proved costly as from that goal kick Droitwich doubled their advantage — Sam Hurdman slipping in Perry Moss, who turned sharply and fired home despite Joe Cunneen getting a hand to it.
The Plums hit back quickly, reducing the deficit on 23 minutes. After good build-up play, Hinkulow's incisive through ball found Reece Day in space inside the area and he finished calmly into the bottom corner to make it 2–1.
The game was then brought to a standstill in the 34th minute following a serious injury to Hinkulow, who received extensive medical attention on the pitch. The stoppage lasted close to 50 minutes before he was stretchered off to warm applause from both sets of players and supporters. Everyone at Pershore Town thanks Droitwich Spa and the medical staff for their swift assistance and wishes Nigel a full recovery.
After play resumed, Droitwich struggled to get back going, and the hosts extended their lead just before half-time when a neat team move saw James Lemon race clear and finish well to restore the two-goal cushion at the break.
The second half was a quieter affair, with chances limited for both sides the best of which saw Jack Griffiths Perry strike the post from outside the area with a ferocious shot, until the 74th minute when Josh Hurdman made it 4–1 following a low cross from Haydn Morris.
Pershore rallied late on, creating several good chances through Day, Yuri Quintas and Griffiths-Perry, but were unable to convert as Droitwich held firm to claim the points and move second in the table.
A difficult day for Pershore, who will look to regroup ahead of a busy week that continues with cup action and further Worcestershire derbies to come.
