Pershore dominated possession and hit the woodwork twice, but couldn’t find a breakthrough as Westfields edged a tight 1-0 encounter.

Pershore hosted Westfields at the That Carpet Place Community Stadium, looking to avenge the opening-day defeat in the reverse fixture.

The first clear opportunity of the game fell to former Plum Aidan Clark, who turned Chris Gregan smartly before forcing Joe Cunneen into a fine fingertip save low to his right.

Just three minutes later, Macca King unleashed a half-volley from outside the area that was acrobatically tipped over the bar by Westfields goalkeeper Shane Sterry. From the resulting corner, King again went close but saw his effort rise over the crossbar.

Pershore controlled large spells of possession and played some excellent football, but struggled to turn that into clear chances. Jack Griffiths Perry cut inside and fired narrowly over the bar around the half-hour mark.

However, with four minutes left in the first half, Westfields took the lead. A free kick into the Pershore box saw Reece Day unable to clear under very close pressure from Cam Davies, who reacted quickest to smash home from close range.

Westfields nearly doubled their lead soon after, striking the crossbar from distance, before Archie Thurston’s overhead kick dropped just wide for the hosts as the first half drew to a close.

After the interval, Yuri Quintas fired straight at Sterry from the edge of the box before pouncing on a poor clearance, only for a last-ditch tackle to deny him a shooting chance. Thurston then drove into the box following a defensive mistake, going down under a heavy challenge — but strong penalty appeals were waved away by referee James Alliband, who also officiated the reverse fixture where Pershore had another penalty shout turned down.

Thurston fired straight at the keeper before Perry blazed over as the hosts pushed hard for an equaliser. With 20 minutes remaining, Quintas did well down the right, squaring for Thurston whose touch diverted the ball wide — just evading substitute Lucas Colley arriving at the back post.

Colley recycled possession, delivering for Ty Griffin, whose deep cross found Quintas, but his shot went wide. Thurston and Colley both sent further efforts off target as the pressure built.

With just minutes remaining, King struck the crossbar with a curling free kick as Pershore continued to press. Kyle Clayton saw a goal-bound effort blocked before another King free kick flew over the bar in the final moments.

Despite dominating possession and creating several late chances, Pershore couldn’t make their pressure count — and it was Westfields who held firm to take all three points.
